Super-Power Oil - George Gittoes - Oil on Canvas 2004

The work of Australian artist George Gittoes (b.1949) may be taken as evidence of the continuing vitality of the Neue Sachlichkeit tradition at the end of the 20th century….he has developed a practice of visiting vital trouble spots throughout the world, places where civil strife is transformed all too often into inhuman savagery, and usually on both sides of the political spectrum... predictably the paintings that have emerged from Gittoes involvement possess an aggressive, but compelling, visual challenge utterly distinct from the work of artists who practice their art in the more secure, urban environments…”
Art historian, Bernard Smith, ‘Modernism’s History’.
Uni of NSW Press.1998.

“ In his work and his life, Gittoes is simultaneously a modernist, a postmodernist, a social realist, a pop artist and an expressionist…. “
