Death Through A Telephoto Lens:
Gaza – Post Hebron Riots. Sat. March 26th, 1994.

Everywhere children man roadblocks.
Many have started lighting fires. This old man came from his house and made a small group of youths see reason and begin putting out the fires they had lit – only minutes earlier – with buckets of water.
This made thick palls of smoke, as much of it was burning rubber from car tyres.
As I drew him, I noticed a confrontation brewing in the distance between IDF soldiers and other youths.
It is totally forbidden to photo 1DF forces, however, I decided to take the risk of having my camera and film confiscated.
Through my 300mm telephoto lense I saw the IDF telling a group of youths to back off and go home – under gunpoint.
One small girl seemed paralyzed with fear. She had dropped her purse and was scarred top pick it up – but unwilling to leave it.
A youth – perhaps her brother, or friend, seemed to move forward to assist her. This was against the soldiers’ orders. He went to reach for whatever it was that belonged to her. Perhaps they thought he was picking up a stone or gun. They shot him point blank. An ambulance appeared almost immediately –
Later I discovered that the youth died.

?George Gittoes is an artist of our clime. He travels, he witnesses, he creates. With driving curiosity he crosses genres and eludes both aesthetic and political stereotypes??a witness of the particular – this person, this sect, this horrendous time and place – he represents the universal, that is, you and me??.the interest of Gittoes remains?in his compelling representations primary questions, deeply dyed in the fabric of our lives.
The question of evil, for instance….. “
